A two-day disability studies workshop commenced at the University of Kashmir today, accompanied by the signing of a significant Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at promoting disability sensitization programs and enhancing comprehension of this emerging academic discipline. The MoU focuses on advancing disability studies as an academic field and fostering greater awareness regarding the necessity of involving students in disability research. Prof Nilofer Khan, the Vice-Chancellor, presided over the inaugural session of the workshop, organized by the Department of English in partnership with the Centre for Disability Research and Training (CDRT) at Kirori Mal College, University of Delhi. Prof Nilofer highlighted the university's commitment to facilitating workshops on crucial aspects of disability studies to establish an inclusive environment that ensures equal academic progress for all students. She expressed the university's dedication to establishing a disability studies center to support other higher education institutions in Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory in promoting this important area of academic exploration due to its significant societal impact. In his keynote address, Prof Someshwar Sati, the CDRT Coordinator, emphasized the relevance of disability studies as a burgeoning academic subject. He explained that the workshop and the MoU aim to examine the intricacies and multifaceted aspects of disability to attain a comprehensive understanding of the subject. Prof F A Masoodi, the Dean of Academic Affairs at KU, who was the guest of honor, also emphasized the workshop's theme and its significance for academic institutions. Prof Iffat Maqbool, the Head of the Department of English, provided a comprehensive overview of the workshop's themes and highlighted the key features of the MoU. She also discussed the department's academic and extracurricular programs conducted in recent years. The workshop, attended by 70 participants from the University of Kashmir, affiliated colleges, and other academic institutions in Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory, featured resource persons Prof Shilpa Das from the National Institute of Design in Ahmedabad and Prof Banibrata Mahanta from the Department of English at Banaras Hindu University. The proceedings of the inaugural session were led by Prof Mufti Mudasir from the Department of English at KU, who also delivered the vote of thanks.
